Uncovering the Oneida Nation
The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin is a federally recognized Native American Tribe located in the greater Green Bay Area. This great nation was once one of the original Five Nations of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy. Oneida means “People of the Standing Stone,” which references the unique characteristic of the territory they settled on. There is actually a stone that you can visit at the Veteran’s Memorial on Highway 54, which pays tribute to the many Oneida Veterans and heroes that have served our country. A visit to the reservation wouldn’t be complete with a visit to the Oneida Nation Museum, where you can experience hands-on exhibits, view original Iroquois artwork, take a walk though the nature trails and visit the Three Sisters Garden. You may even be able to find beautiful Native American Artwork from tribal artists to take home with you at the museum store. For a more complete historical and cultural tour of the Oneida Nation, including stops at the Log Home Restoration Area, where the Water Birds Nest, and the Buffalo Overlook, considering booking a tour ahead of time.
